Program Learning Outcomes:
- Interpret all levels of emergency medical care and ambulance operations.
- Understand the human body, including the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal system.
- Assess and record vital signs.
- Appropriately lift and move patients.
- Effectively demonstrate EMTB skills under the Department of Transportation and National Highway Traffic Administration.
Job Responsibilities:
An EMT brings specialized pre-hospital emergency medical care to trauma victims by stabilizing their injury or illness and safely transporting them to a hospital. Basic functions include: controlling bleeding, applying bandages, administering oxygen, resuscitation, shock treatment, childbirth assistance, treating poisoning or burn victims and evacuation assistance. Other duties include communications, documentation, ambulance operation, and maintenance.
Advancement Opportunities:
- Obtain a higher level of certification as a paramedic through WestMed College.
- Become an instructor, dispatcher, registered nurse, or physician assistant with additional education and training.
- Transition into sales or marketing of emergency medical equipment with additional education and training.
